How to apply for your Provisional Driving Licence

How to apply for your Provisional Driving Licence

The criteria for applying:

Applying for a Provisional Licence is easy when applying through an official website such as the one here however before you do, you must meet some essential criteria.

1.) You can apply from the age of 15 years and 9 months – 3 months before your 16th birthday

Not a lot people are aware of this fact, and think they can only apply a few months before they turn 17, this is not the case, and as said, you can apply much more earlier on.

2.) It is essential that you can read a number plate from 20 metres away

Now, fret not if you are unable to do so with your own vision, as long as you wear glasses or contact lenses during your time driving, then this is perfectly fine, as long as it ensures you can read the number plate from 20 metres away.

3.) You can provide an identity document for your applications

The only exception to this rule is if you hold a biometric passport, to see if you have a biometric passport, you can click here however the main giveaway is having the photograph and signature on the same page.

4.) You can provide addresses for where you have lived for the past 3 years

Now this is self-explanatory, but you are required to list the addresses you have lived at the past 3 years in order to increase the chances of a successful application.

5.) You can pay  £34 online through the use of a Mastercard, Visa, Electron Maestro or Delta credit or debit card

Again, this is self-explanatory but a fee is required in order for you to send of your application, if online this is £34.

6.) Have your national insurance number

This isn’t an ‘essential’ as such, as the national insurance number is only required IF you have it.

Once you have these essentials, you can apply online here

Ways of applying:

Now the part everyone has been waiting for, how to actually apply for your licence.

Online

If you meet the criteria above, you can apply online by pressing here in which you have to create a DVLA account in order to actually apply, its quick, easy and won’t take more than a few moments of your time. This can take up to a week to arrive

The other way which you can apply is by post. This requires a D1 Application Form which can easily from the Post Office, or the DVLA form ordering service which can be accessed here. With this, you must include:

1.) Original documents confirming your identity

2.) A colour passport style photograph

3.) A fee of £43

Please note that the fee cannot be paid by cash, but only a cheque or postal order made out to the DVLA

All this must then be sent to:
