How Many Driving Lessons Do You Really Need?

If there’s one common factor shared by the majority of learner drivers, it’s the wish to pass their test as quickly as possible. “How many lessons will I need before I’m ready to pass my test?” Is probably the most common question we get asked. And it’s a fair one. Learning to drive takes time, money, and patience. The problem is that everyone is different. So, there can’t be one single answer. But we can give you a couple of guidelines.

How Many Driving Lessons Will You Need?

The average driving learning journey

In the UK, the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) recommends that all learner drivers have around 45 hours of professional driving lessons before taking their practical driving test. They also suggest that most learners will benefit from 20+ hours of private practice.

In other countries, such as the US or Australia, lesson requirements vary by state or territory. However, most new drivers average 20 to 50 hours of instruction. Globally, that puts the average at about 30 to 50 hours of driving lessons to be safe and ready to test.

Why do some learners need more lessons than others?

There are multiple different reasons why one person may need more driving lessons than another. It’s just like learning to walk, talk, ride a bike, or do your times tables. No two learners are the same. So, the learning journey is always going to be different too. But these are some of the most common factors that affect how many lessons you’ll need:

Previous experience

Have you driven before? On private land, may be. If you’ve had informal practice with friends or family, driving around a field, or even just familiarising yourself with the mechanics of changing gears and reversing, you’re likely to learn more quickly than complete beginners.

Lesson frequency

The more often you have lessons, the faster your confidence will grow. You’ll also find that the necessary knowledge tends to stick more quickly when your lessons are closer together. So, while most people opt for weekly lessons, if you want to learn faster, taking 2 to 3 lessons per week may speed your progress.

Confidence and Nerves

Driving anxiety is completely normal amongst learners. But some struggle with nerves more than others. You won’t be test ready until you feel more confident. And that’s fine. But you’ll need to be prepared to have a few extra lessons.

Private practice

The more you practice outside of your professional driving lessons, the faster you’ll learn. Just make sure that you’re with an adult driver with the relevant experience. And driving an insured vehicle.

Your instructor’s style

Your driving instructor significantly impacts your learning experience. If you’re not confident in them or comfortable with them, you’re unlikely to progress quickly. Your instructor’s role is not just to provide you with the knowledge you need to succeed. But with the support you need to feel confident. If that’s not the case, find a better instructor.

When it comes down to it, the important thing isn’t how many driving lessons you need. It’s how safe and confident a driver you become. Because you’re not just learning to pass a test. So, instead of focusing only on how few lessons you can get away with, think about whether you feel confident in your ability to drive safely alone. Once the answer is yes, you’re ready.
